Specialist children’s dental service launched

PD Elite 20A dental service for children with special needs has been launched by public health minister Michael Matheson.

Bridgeton Health Centre’s paediatric dental service has been re-designed to make it more calming and child-friendly, in an attempt to remove any fears children with special needs may have, particularly those with autism.

The Glasgow centre’s re-developed service is the brainchild of two NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde staff: Lyndsay Ovenstone, senior dental officer, and Debbie Connelly, health improvement senior for oral health.

Ms Connelly said: ‘Children with autism have difficulty understanding and relating to other people, as well as taking part in everyday family life and a trip to the dentist can be terrifying for them.’

Children visiting the dentist for the first time are given talking books before their appointment to help put them at ease.

The books show pictures of the centre, the staff and the surgery, with a narrative provided for each picture to familiarise the child with the new experience.

Questionnaires are also sent to the parent or carer before the visit, allowing dental staff to tailor the experience to any particular needs.

In light of this new special needs children’s dental service, Thelma Edwards explains why she designed a toolkit to help autistic children when visiting the dentist.

Dental Patients turn to Twitter

TwitterResearchers have discovered that patients with dental pain have been turning to Twitter for advice. The microblogging site is becoming a new means for dental professionals to communicate with patients.

In a study entitled ‘Public Health Surveillance of Dental Pain via Twitter’, published in the Journal of Dental Research, researchers demonstrated that Twitter users are extensively sharing their experiences of toothache and seeking advice from other users.

The researchers investigated the content of Twitter posts meeting search criteria relating to dental pain. A set of 1,000 tweets was randomly selected from 4,859 tweets over seven non-consecutive days. The content was coded using pre-established, non-mutually exclusive categories, including the experience of dental pain, actions taken or contemplated in response to a toothache, impact on daily life and advice sought from the Twitter community.

After excluding ambiguous tweets, spam and repeat users, 772 tweets were analysed and frequencies calculated. Of those tweets, 83% were primarily categorised as a general statement of dental pain, 22% as an action taken or contemplated, and 15% as describing an impact on daily activities. Among the actions taken or contemplated, 44% reported seeing a dentist, 43% took an analgesic or antibiotic medication and 14% actively sought advice from the Twitter community.

Oh, what a night!

dentistry scotland sponsors Seated at the awards ceremony, Dentistry Scotland Awards

The Dentistry Scotland Awards were created to celebrate the best in Scottish dentistry at a glittering ceremony, and we’re pleased to report that they achieved exactly that.

The Gleneagles Hotel was the glamorous setting for this inaugural event, held on 25 November. On arrival, guests were treated to a champagne reception while the band played in the background, before moving into the splendid ballroom – led by a traditional Scottish piper, of course – where the ceremony took place.

Chairman of the judging panel, Robert Donald co-hosted the event – with Dentistry Scotland’s managing editor, Heather Podbury – he said it had ‘been uplifting to review such a stunning array of high quality entries, which provide both inspiration and encouragement to our colleagues.’
